Obituary for Roger Viner

John Roger Viner
July 12, 1947-February 9, 2022

It is with profound sadness that the family announces the passing of Roger Viner. Roger died peacefully in his sleep with family by his side in Kingston, Ontario.
Roger was the beloved partner of Sheena Bromstein and devoted dad of Cameron Viner.
Left to mourn his passing are his sister Jill Fraser (Dan) and his niece Meaghan Fraser of Magnetawan, Ontario.
Roger was predeceased by his father John Charles (Jack) Viner in 1986, his mother Myra Aisne Clayton in 2007, his older sister Daele Viner in 2008, his aunt Agnes McMillan (Joe), his cousin Bradley McMillan, and his step-grandmother Rita Clayton.
Roger was born in Toronto, and he grew up in the family home on Blantyre Avenue that his Poppy Alfred Clayton built. His cousin Brad McMillan lived a few houses down, and they were a couple of pranksters, adding wheels to anything they could find. Many summer holidays were spent at the Clayton cottage located in Coehill, Bancroft Area.
Roger attended Malvern Collegiate. In 1965, Roger’s family bought a general store, later known as Jack’s General Store in Magnetawan, Ontario. He drove a packed Land Rover north in the blinding snow on moving day. He enjoyed helping his parents, doing delivery runs to local people in town, and he finished his final year of high school in Burk’s Falls. He had developed a passion for electronics and sound systems. Roger attended Ryerson Polytech. for electronic engineering.
Roger spent many years in local recording studios in Toronto, most notably Eastern Sound. He met many Canadian and international performers, and he played a role in recording their albums. He soon joined CBC with whom he stayed with until retiring. Roger played an integral role in setting up and maintaining CBC’s transmission system within the CN Tower.
Roger and Sheena decided a quieter life in Kingston was a good move. Soon after their son Cameron was born, they took up country life in Yarker – near Kingston. After Roger retired from the CBC, he still maintained TV/radio transmission towers in the eastern end of the province for TVO.
During his retirement, he built a large garage to hold his many collections: cars, electronics, and speakers that he built. Roger treasured his very impressive and extensive vinyl record collection. He was much like his father – a collector. Roger had a strong interest in all aspects of photography. He was also an amateur radio enthusiast.
Roger had a love for fine cars. He was especially fond of his 1961 Morgan, a 1973 Alfa Romeo, and his last car, which was just great fun: a Mini Cooper. When his son Cameron brought home his first vehicle, Roger saw a “Monster” truck pull in, which created some great humour between them.
Roger loved jazz music and joined the Kingston Jazz Festival as a director, organizing events and helping with sound systems for many years.
Roger enjoyed camping, and their last family trip was to Eastern Canada. They bought a camping rig for the occasion.
The rural life led to daily swims in the nearby Napanee River at Colebrook, and he also looked forward to get-togethers with friends in the area. Roger, much like his father, loved to tell and hear stories, always enjoying lots of laughs.
Please celebrate Roger’s life by turning up the volume on some classic jazz, raising your glass, and saying cheers to Roger.
Cremation has taken place. Spring internment and a family service will be held at St. Johns Norway Cemetery, Toronto. Roger will be laid to rest beside his beloved family.
If so desired, memorial donations may be made to Rideaucrest Home in Kingston, or the Canadian Alzheimer’s Society.
