Obituary for Dr. Phillip Lawrence Samis

Dr. Philip Lawrence Samis passed away peacefully at 94 years of age on January 11, 2022 at the John M. Parrott Centre in Napanee Ontario. Philip is survived by his son Mark Samis, daughter Jill McCutcheon, grandson Timothy Samis and grandson Angus McCutcheon. Philip was born in Edmonton Alberta. As a teenager he was sent to attend school and play hockey at St. Michael’s College School in Toronto where he was on a Memorial Cup championship team. He then went on to play for the Oshawa Generals. Phil was called up to the Toronto Maple Leafs and was on the 1947-48 Stanley Cup Championship team. He then went on to play in the American Hockey League with the Pittsburgh Hornets and then the Cleveland Barons. In the American Hockey League, Phil earned a reputation as a tough defenceman with a 1950-51 Calder Cup win with Cleveland. He finished his hockey career with the Montreal Royals while he attended dental school at McGill University. Phil was a top student where he was a Gold Award winner and Editor-in-Chief of the Dental Review. Phil went on to run a successful dental practice in Montreal for more than 40 years. The family would like to thank the staff of the John M. Parrott Centre for the excellent care of Philip, especially near the end of his life. He will be missed by his family and may he rest in peace.
